Operation Principle:
CT (Current Transformer) sensors utilize the turns ratio principle to convert the primary current into a proportional secondary current. An alternating current (AC) in the secondary winding generates a magnetic flux opposing the primary flux, ensuring linearity. This secondary current flows through a shunt resistor, producing a voltage proportional to the measured current.
Key Features:
AC-only measurement (unsuitable for DC).
Cost-effective solution.
Ideal for 50/60 Hz commercial power applications.
Used in clamp meters for energy management in smart buildings.
High linearity due to flux cancellation (negative feedback).
Typical Applications:
Energy monitoring, industrial equipment, and grid infrastructure.
Operation Principle:
Hall sensors measure current by detecting the magnetic field around a conductor using the Hall effect. A Hall voltage is generated in a sensor placed in a magnetic core gap, amplified, and output as a proportional signal.
Key Features:
Measures both DC and AC (up to kHz ranges).
Affordable but prone to temperature drift and aging effects.
Limited precision due to magnetic core and sensor linearity.
Magnetic core limits high-frequency performance.
Typical Applications:
Battery management systems, electric vehicles, and industrial drives.
Operation Principle:
Rogowski coils measure AC current by inducing a voltage in an air-core coil proportional to the time derivative (di/dt) of the primary current. An integrator converts this signal to a current-proportional output.
Key Features:
Split Core Design: Enables non-invasive installation on existing conductors without breaking the circuit.
No magnetic core → No saturation, hysteresis, or heating.
Lightweight, flexible, and suitable for high-current applications.
Low impedance and wide bandwidth.
Smart Meter Integration: Ideal for grid-scale monitoring due to immunity to DC offsets and transient robustness.
Limitations:
Typical Applications:
Smart grid infrastructure, renewable energy systems, and industrial machinery.
